Are we really in security with internet in our modern world ?
I'm going to speak about the notion spaces and exchanges. First, I'd like to give a definition of this notion. It deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and languages interactions have shaped and characterized our modern day world. In our society, internet has won a top position. Nobody can live or work without internet nowadays. It's the foundations of our society and so on its weakness. In this way, we can wonder if we really are in security with internet
in our modern world. First, I'm going to speak about the social networks and their consequences on the population. Then, I'm going to speak about WikiLeaks, a non-profit organization which reveals secret US information to the world.
In our modern world, internet has won a top social position. Nobody can live or work without internet. With internet, there are so many social networks which had been developed. There is a huge percentage of the population which had subscribed on. Those social networks are full of information about us, and these information are wanted by many businesses. Take for example Facebook. For free, we can chat with all our friends, publish some photos... But as we have seen in a cartoon we worked on in class "if you're not paying for it, you're not the customer. You're
the product being sold." That sentence means that, for example, Facebook isn't really free. They will collect a lot of information about us and will sell those to businesses which will use it after to put some publicity on internet of products that could be interesting for us. We are the product of a big market. To give some numbers, a shoe size can be sold about 20€. It's huge. We are the
hurt of a big market all made with social networks. We have to be really careful in internet about the "free services". But even if we can be a product, there are other way to be endangered with internet.
WikiLeaks is a non-profit organization which was created by Julian Assange, the main hacker of the organization and of the biggest leak of secrets information in history. In 2010 they revealed more than 90 thousands US military secrets documents, most of them about the attacks in Afghanistan managed by the US government. This leak is known as the biggest leak in history, as aforementioned. Julian Assange did it because he wants the world, he wants every person to know about the volunteers, about the atrocities done by the US government. This seems to
be something good, but there are so many cons. First, the documents reveal the military strategy of the USA in every conflict all around the world. All of those are now compromise. Moreover, it endangered all the life of the sources and the soldiers which applicated the orders of the Pentagon. That's a huge problem for the US government, which has now to protect those persons who have their life in danger.
For me, Julian Assange did something good but took a big risk by endangering thousands
of lives... This shows us that we cannot be in security in our modern world nowadays. There are people who can know everything about us only with internet, or who can reveal the protected document of the governments as WikiLeaks has done, putting in danger the lives of the soldiers and the country, which can be the target of revenge.
As a conclusion, we can say that we aren't really in security on internet. As we have seen, the social networks make us being a product, a way to make them to earn money. Moreover, the hackers can, by wanting something good, put in danger many civilians, soldiers or countries. According to me, his will continue and can be amplified in some years, because there will always be more and more people in social networks and more people using internet. But with this idea of
progress, what could be our future in 20 years ?
